O.C.D. Causes

There are many ideas about what causes OCD, but no single idea is accepted as the main cause. Experts agree that the development of OCD is a combination of factors, both biological and psychological.
Some of the factors are:
  • Infection with group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (a type of bacteria)
    • Children that develop OCD as a result of the infection are identifi ed by the acronym PANDAS (pediatric autoimmune neuropsychictric disorders associated with streptococci).
  • Genetic predispostion
  • Biochemical irregularities
  • Stressful or traumatic life events
  • History of childhood anxiety
  • Family problems
Most people get better or worse at times over the coarse of their OCD. Their symptoms worsen when they are under stress, sick, or are not getting enough sleep.
